Happy New Year. Soz if you're one of those "You can't say it after 7th!!" types.
I haven't emailed you since November so hopefully you'll forgive me for being customary...
Do you really need video for your podcast to succeed?
There’s a growing narrative that you absolutely need a video component to boost your podcast's success.
Influencers and so-called experts are pushing the idea that uploading video versions of your podcast to YouTube is crucial because “YouTube is now the most listened to podcast app.”
Well, first off, YouTube is not officially the most listened to podcast app.
I do find it strange that the market researchers at Edison don't scrutinise this data point more vigorously. After all, people don't really listen to anything on YouTube. YouTube music, yes.
But that's an entirely different app with a far smaller user base. It just goes to show what peddling a narrative for clicks can achieve for a platform.
We're all led to believe we need to get our podcasts on YouTube in video format, because people are listening to them, and it puts our content in front of billions of people. Yet none of that is actually true!
Anyway, I've recently spent a lot of time on this subject on both social media, my blog on the website, and also on the podcast. So if you'd like to catch up with the episodes, you'll find me talking about whether or not 'video podcasts' (as the bruhs are calling them) can really kill of audio podcasts (spoiler alert - I don't think so). "Is Video About To Kill The Audio Podcast Star?" explores this topic.
And also, is the newly emerging video podcast arena leading to an unfair playing field for women?
"Women in video podcasting - is the competition fair?" is new, today.
I also posit the reason for this agenda to drive people more towards video. You guessed it, money.
You can hear more on my rationale for that in " 'Video podcast studio' or just a marketing agency?"

Podcast Improvement Audit - news
Later in 2025, I'm launching a membership community for podcasters of all sizes and types to get support from myself and other like-minded creators.
As well as a ton of stuff they can watch, listen to, interact with and learn from, they'll also be able to get access to my podcast improvement audit service on a first come first serve basis within the community as part of the membership.
This means I'll be removing the audits from public access in a few months.
If you've been wanting to get my ears on what you're doing, and leverage my vast experience to get better results from your efforts, now is the time to act.
It's easy to book.
Simply choose the date you'd like your one-to-one with me (during which we'll discuss the results) book in, pay, and you'll be given a short questionnaire to fill in about your podcast. Once all that's done, you'll receive both a comprehensive written report and video summary from me, straight to your inbox.
This will be sent in plenty of time for you to digest ahead of the one-to-one call, in which you'll have the opportunity to go deep on specific aspects of the report's findings, empowering you to really knock it out of the park this year
