Hey,
Most of the advice out there about figuring out your ideal listener is the same old "create an avatar" nonsense. While that's not entirely wrong, it's a bit like saying you'll find the perfect partner by writing a list of their traits - good luck with that!
Here's a more down-to-earth approach.
Start with the bloody obvious
What's your podcast about?
Who'd be interested in that topic?
If you're doing a show about knitting tea cosies for cats, your ideal listener probably isn't a 16-year-old heavy metal fan.
(Although, never say never, that could be an interesting niche!)
Don't be afraid to get specific
Instead of vague demographics, think about the kind of person who'd love your show.
Are they busy professionals grabbing a quick listen on their commute? In which case, you're probably not wanting to do an epic 45 minute conversation.
Are they researchers looking for in-depth discussions? Then you're not going to be able to get away with a five minute micro-podcast covering the surface points.
The more specific you are, the better you can tailor your content.
Are you following "The Podmaster"?
Where do they hang out?
This is crucial.
Are they on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit? And if so, what subreddits are they on? Are they clued up on the culture, or do they need some more hand-holding?
Find those online communities and listen to what they're saying.
What are they struggling with?
What are they curious about?
This gives you valuable insights and helps you connect with potential listeners.
Don't be a spammy prat
No one likes being sold to.
Instead of barging into groups shouting "LISTEN TO MY PODCAST!", engage in genuine conversations.
Offer insights up front, answer questions, and build relationships.
People are more likely to check out your show if they know, like, and trust you from the start.
It's a marathon, not a sprint
Your ideal listener might not be who you initially thought.
As your podcast grows, so will your understanding of your audience.
Trust me on this - I've seen it time and time again. If only I had a pound for every corporate who were so adamant they knew all about their ideal listeners just because they'd invested in some 'high level market research' for their wider business...
Everyone's an expert.
Pay attention to your download stats, feedback, and social media interactions.
Don't be afraid to adjust your approach along the way.
What about you? What insights can you glean from your own habits?
Think about your favourite podcasts.
Why do you love them?
What keeps you coming back for more?
Apply those same principles to your own show.
Remember, building a loyal audience takes time and effort.
But by understanding who you're talking to, you can create a podcast that truly resonates with your listeners.
Now go forth and create some bloody brilliant content!
