How are we already at Monday, ?
I have a question for you.
Ever listened to a podcast where the music made you want to crawl into a hole and die of boredom?
Yeah, me too.
Music can make or break your podcast, setting the mood, grabbing attention, or sending your listeners straight to sleep.
So, how do you pick the right 'choons'?
Mood is everything
Think about the vibe you want for your podcast.
Is it upbeat and energetic, or chilled and reflective?
The music should match.
A heavy metal track on a gardening podcast?
Probably not the best idea.
Yet, I've heard it. On an award submission.
Imagine the music you add as the soundtrack to your listener's experience.
Know your audience
Who are you talking to?
What kind of music do they like?
If you're targeting a younger audience, you might want something a bit more current sounding. (But do not use songs that have been in the charts. That's going to get you sued for royalties.)
If it's an older crowd, maybe something a bit more classic.
Psst! Are you following "The Podmaster"?
Keep it short and sweet
No one wants to listen to a 5-minute intro track.
Use music sensibly and strategically.
A short intro and outro sting at the beginning and end, and a transition sound or short clip of your song between segments, makes impact.
If the content lends itself to a musical background, then by all means add some but make sure it's low down in the mix.
You don't want your soundtrack drowning out your voice or the voice of your podcast's host.
Test and measure
Before you hit publish, listen to your podcast with the music.
Does it flow well?
Does it enhance the content? If not, go back to the planning stage and give it some more thought.
Choosing the right music takes a bit of effort, but it's worth it.
It can elevate your podcast from 'meh' to 'bloody brilliant'!
